Hybrid Bluegills
Hybrid Bluegills are a cross between two of the sunfish family: the blue gill and the green sunfish. Generally males are the predominate offspring Only registered users can see links on this board! Many reach 8 and one half inches to 10 inches in length in 12 to18 months after being stocked as 2 to 3 inch fingerlings. They thrive in warm water, 70 to 85?F. They are not sterile as many think but because of the high ratio of males, they are much less prolific than regular bluegills and much faster growing. They do well when stocked with other pond fish such as trout, large mouth bass, channel catfish and perch.
Channel Catfish
Channel Catfish are often thought to be relative to southern states only but do well in Michigan and northern states fish ponds. They thrive in water temperatures ranging from 70 to 85?F and feed on minnows, insects and commercial fish pellets. When raised as 4 to 6 inch fingerlings in the spring, they can grow to 12 to 14 inches long by the fall. Channel catfish can reach 25 to 30 pounds and are very tasty. They do well when stocked with hybrid bluegills, large-mouth bass, walleye and trout. Catfish will spawn in warm water fish ponds when spawning containers are available.
Large Mouth Bass
Large-mouth bass are one of the best predator fish for controlling the number of small fish in a fish pond or lake. They put up a real battle when caught by hook and line. They are often stocked with hybrid bluegills, channel catfish, perch and walleye. Care should be taken to stock predator pond fish before your lake or pond becomes overrun with small or stunted fish.
Fathead Minnows
Fathead minnows are a very important bait minnow for fisherman and provide forage for large pond fish. They generally reach 2 to 3 and one half inches in length and have a life span of 2 to 3 years. They are very hardy and tolerate considerable handling. Spawning begins when water temperatures reach 50-55?F and repeat monthly until waters cool in the fall. They are very prolific breeders, laying 200 to 500 eggs per spawn. Stocking fatheads with game pond fish can greatly increase the growth of the desired game fish.
Mosquitofish
Mosquitofish (gambusia affinis) are small, brownish fish that grow up to approx. 2 inches long. They are used for vector control (fancy word for mosquito control) by municipalities throughout the United States. Many pond owners benefit from adding mosquito fish to their pond since each mature mosquitofish can eat up 300 mosquito larvae a day. They are prolific breeders and readily multiply. They can live well in nearly any water condition including swamps and brackish water. Lime disease besides West Nile Virus is transferred by mosquitoes, so it’s best to keep your pond from becoming still and stagnant which are prime areas where mosquitoes love to lay their larvae. Mosquitofish are a great pond fish to have no matter what size of pond or water garden you may have.
What do you recommend for stocking a new fish pond?
Factors including size, pond depth, location, temperatures, weeds present or not present, structure and clarity all determine what kind and how many fish to stock. Below is an example of the maximum stocking rates for ponds that are 1 acre, 12 acre or 13 acre. You will need proper aeration. We recommend approximately a 3 to 1 ratio in of non-predatorpredator fish. Size of fish shown below can be changed, if desired.
1 acre pond, over 14 feet deep: 500 3 to 4 inch bluegills, 200 4 to 6 inch trout, 100 4 to 6 inch channel catfish, 100 4 to 5 inch perch, 100 3 to 5 inch bass, and 3 gallons of minnows.
12 acre pond, 10 to 12 feet deep: 300 3 to 4 inch bluegills, 75 4 to 6 inch trout, 75 4 to 6 inch channel catfish, 75 4 to 5 inch perch, 50 3 to 5 inch bass, 2 gallons of minnows.
13 acre pond, 8 to 10 feet deep: 250 3 to 4 inch bluegills, no trout recommended, 50 4 to 6 inch channel catfish, 50 4 to 5 inch perch, 25 3 to 5 inch bass, 2 gallons of minnows.
